About Weeds n' Wonders

We started because too many gardeners do not turn up, do not answer, and do not take much care once they get there. Everything about how we work comes back to those three things.

No commitment. We call, you decide.

The short answer

Who We Are

Weeds n’ Wonders is a garden maintenance business working across Melbourne’s eastern and north eastern suburbs, including Kew, Camberwell, Hawthorn, Balwyn, Ivanhoe and Toorak.

We look after private gardens, apartment and townhouse common grounds and commercial properties, on regular visits or as one off work. The business was started in 2024 by Jose and Gabe and is rated 5 out of 5 on Google.

We are fully insured for residential and commercial work.

Our story

Why We Started

We started Weeds n’ Wonders because of what we kept seeing in this industry.

Gardeners who did not turn up when they said they would. Enquiries and messages that went unanswered. Work done without much care, by people getting through a list rather than thinking about the garden.

None of that is a skills problem. It is a standards problem, and it seemed like there was room to do it differently. Turn up when we say we will. Answer people. Take the details seriously. Actually think about what is best for the garden rather than what is quickest to finish.

It began as a small weekend business built around exactly those principles. Clients stayed, then recommended us to their neighbours, and it grew from there into something with a team behind it, built to the same standards it started with.

Almost all of that growth came from word of mouth. We have never been the cheapest quote and we have never advertised much. That is a slow way to build a business and a good way to end up with clients worth keeping.

The name

Where the Name Came From

The weeds are where a garden starts when it has been left alone. Overgrowth, weeds, general disorder.

The wonders are what we aim to leave behind. Clean, neat, well maintained, and somewhere you actually want to spend time.

Weeds to wonders. That is the whole job.

Before: Nature strip. Long grass mown back off the footpath and around the hydrant.

Positioning

Why We Are Not the Cheapest, and What You Get Instead

You can get a garden mown in Melbourne for considerably less than we charge. That is worth being honest about.

Here is what the cheaper visit usually costs you later. A lawn cut too short, because a lower blade means a faster job. It thins, the soil dries out, and weeds fill the gaps. A hedge cut without regard to the shape it needs, so the base goes bare and is slow to recover, if it recovers at all. A tree lopped back to stubs rather than pruned to the collar, which triggers weak regrowth that needs cutting again sooner and is likelier to fail in a storm. Weeds knocked over rather than lifted, so they are back in a fortnight.

None of that is visible on the day. Every one of those jobs looks finished when the trailer pulls away. The cost arrives six months later, and it is usually larger than the saving.

What we do instead is unglamorous. We cut at the right height for the grass and the season. We shape hedges so light reaches the base. We prune to the branch collar and not past a fifth of the canopy. We lift weeds at the root.

And we will tell you when not to spend money. If your lawn will never grow under that tree, we will say so rather than mowing a bare patch every month. If a hedge is past saving, replanting is cheaper than three years of rescue attempts. If a job belongs with a qualified arborist, we hand it over.

Do not take our word for it. All of that is set out in detail on the service pages, with the actual mowing heights, the pruning windows and the species that struggle to come back from a hard cut. Read those and judge for yourself whether we know what we are doing.

The directors

Who Runs It

Jose

Director, Garden Maintenance

Jose runs the field and horticultural side of the business. He oversees the work, trains the team, takes most of the phone enquiries, and works out what each property actually needs.

He is analytical by nature and wants to understand why something should be done a particular way. When he meets a plant or a problem he does not know, he researches it properly rather than guessing, and that habit is where the standards and training at Weeds n’ Wonders came from.

He also lives a vegan lifestyle and thinks a good deal about the environmental impact of the work, which shapes how he approaches plant health and garden care.

In his words: good garden maintenance is not about making a garden look tidy on the day. It is about understanding what you are working with, and making decisions that keep improving the garden over the long term.

Gabe

Co Director, Administration

Gabe looks after the administration behind the business, including accounts, and handles most written communication with clients.

He holds an honours degree in psychological science and spent more than seven years in client liaison and administration before this. He also has professional garden maintenance experience and has been a keen gardener most of his life, so the person answering your email understands the work being described.

If you get a clear, prompt reply from us, that is usually Gabe.

How we work

How We Work

We turn up when we said we would

It is the reason the business exists. If something changes, you hear it from us first.

A text the day before

An automated message goes out the day before your visit, so you know we are coming.

One method, every visit

There is one way we do things and Jose trains everyone to it, so the standard does not depend on who is holding the shears.

Nothing gets left behind

Not on the lawn, not on the nature strip, not in a pile by the fence. Where there is room in your green bin we use it, because that costs you nothing. Anything beyond that we bag and take with us. What leaves with us goes to a licensed council facility and is processed into mulch and compost rather than landfill.

Quiet where we can be

We use electric tools where the job allows, which keeps noise down enough to work on a weekday without upsetting your street.

We tell you what we find

If something is failing, spreading or about to become expensive, you hear about it while it is still small.

You do not need to be home

Most of our regular clients are not. Regular clients often leave a spare key with us if they are comfortable with that.

Where we stop

What We Do Not Do

Knowing where a business stops is more useful than hearing what it can supposedly handle.

We do not climb trees or use elevated work platforms

We prune from the ground with ladders and extension equipment, which reaches well above head height, so higher hedges and trees are within scope. Beyond that, it goes to a qualified arborist.

We do not take on large tree removals

Smaller trees we can remove safely with our own equipment. Anything larger is a different trade.

We do not do landscape design or construction

We maintain gardens. If yours was designed by somebody, we hold it to their intent rather than quietly turning it into something else.

We do not take on work we cannot do properly

If a job needs someone else, we will tell you who, and we would rather lose it than do it badly.

Highly recommend this team for anyone looking for thorough and reliable garden maintenance. They handled a full range of tasks for me, including weeding, tidying up bushes, lawn mowing, and leaf blowing, along with full green waste removal. What really impressed me was their attention to detail; they tackled weeded areas I hadn’t even expected them to touch. They are incredibly easy to talk to, flexible with requests, and the pricing is completely transparent. It’s rare to find a crew that is this efficient while still being so meticulous.
