Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East and Eaglemont fall away toward the Yarra to the south and the Darebin Creek to the west. Blocks are terraced, cut into the slope, or stepped down in levels held by retaining walls. Very few gardens here are flat, and that changes how mowing, access, drainage and waste removal all work.
Parts of Ivanhoe and Eaglemont were laid out as garden suburbs designed to sit inside the landscape rather than on top of it. Curved streets that follow the contours, open frontages, communal reserves and informal planting rather than clipped formality. Maintaining a garden in these streets is about keeping the character, not imposing a different one. A hard clipped hedge line in an informal garden suburb setting looks wrong to everybody who lives there.
Grevilleas, banksias, correas, callistemon, tea tree and eucalypts are common through these gardens. Native plants have real requirements that run opposite to exotic gardening. Most will not reshoot from bare old wood, so a hard cut back can kill them. Many, particularly the grevilleas and banksias, are damaged by high phosphorus fertiliser, which is exactly what ordinary garden feed contains. Doing nothing is often better than doing the wrong thing.
Properties near the Yarra flats, Darebin Parklands and the creek corridors get the benefit of the setting and the consequences of it. Environmental weeds move in from the reserve. Leaf litter and dry growth build up along boundaries. Both need managing rather than ignoring.
Steep driveways, steps down to a rear garden, terraces reached only on foot. Getting equipment in and waste out is frequently the hardest part of an Ivanhoe job, and it is why a quote given sight unseen here is usually wrong.
